Statement from APHA Executive Director Georges C. Benjamin, MD

“The American Public Health Association is proud to join the Ad Council and COVID Collaborative in today’s launch of a powerful public service announcement campaign featuring former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter as well as former first ladies Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton and Rosalynn Carter. The PSAs encourage all Americans to get a vaccination when it’s available to them and to find answers to their top questions about the COVID-19 vaccines at GetVaccineAnswers.org.

I am so thankful for this outreach by our former presidents and first ladies that I believe will strengthen the public’s trust in science and national leadership. The public health community will continue to call on trusted leaders to convey factual, science-based information while easing concerns and discrediting falsehoods.

While we now have three approved vaccines to lift us out of this health crisis, I caution all Americans to not let their guard down as we have a lot more to accomplish before we can put this pandemic behind us. Please remain diligent in following public health guidance: wear masks, keep your distance and wash your hands often to keep yourself, your loved ones and your community safe.”
