APHA Press releases "Certified in Public Health Exam Review Guide"

Now, more than ever, public health professionals are called upon to meet the increasing health challenges facing communities across the country. The National Board of Public Health Examiners administers a voluntary Certified in Public Health, or CPH, exam to ensure that public health students and graduates have mastered the knowledge and skills relevant to this evolving field.

To help study for this important exam, APHA Press recently published the Certified in Public Health Exam Review Guide. “Becoming certified in public health is critical to professionalizing the public health degree,” Karen D. Liller, PhD, EdS, MA, CPH, who developed and co-edited the guide, told Public Health Newswire.

Those who hold a CPH certification are well-poised to address the inter-disciplinary, dynamic and changing world of public health. And as the field evolves, so does the CPH exam, which has been newly revamped this year. “The review guide is built around the new domains and tasks in public health developed by the National Board of Public Health Examiners,” explained Liller.

Each chapter provides a review of critical content, references, case studies and a method to test practical knowledge. Answers to practice questions at the end of each chapter help readers obtain a fuller understanding of the content presented. For those preparing to take the CPH exam, this is an invaluable tool.

Contributors to the review guide include nearly 20 faculty members from the University of South Florida’s College of Public Health, or USF COPH, who hold CPH designations. Jaime A. Corvin, PhD, MSPH, CPH, developed and co-edited the guide with Liller, who is a full professor at the university. Corvin is an associate professor at the college and director of its Master’s in Public Health program.

She told Public Health Newswire, “The USF COPH stands at the forefront of integrating the public health core courses so that students learn the information that they will practice in the field. The review guide draws on lessons taught in the master’s-level classroom to create a user-friendly resource that covers the topics most relevant to public health professionals.”

A recent graduate of the college, Hari H. Venkatachalam, MPH, CPH, served as teaching assistant for its integrated core courses under Corvin and provided editorial management for the guide. “We have been very pleased with the success of the guide,” he told Public Health Newswire. “There is and will continue to be a large need for the guide as additional schools and programs of public health promote the CPH exam and its content for their students, faculty and alumni.”
