Your guide to the APHA Global Public Health Film Festival

The APHA Global Public Health Film Festival is always an APHA Annual Meeting crowd favorite. After all, who doesn’t enjoy seeing their work on the silver screen? Catch up with the latest public health films, documentaries and shorts on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday in San Diego.

The 2018 lineup includes exciting talks with directors, journalists and even FBI agents! Check out the full festival schedule and trailers for a few of the featured films:

Sunday, Nov. 11

2-4:30 p.m. Kick-off event: “The Bleeding Edge” — A Groundbreaking Investigation into the Medical Device Industry (Implications for Public Health)

This kick-off event will include a screening of “The Bleeding Edge” and a discussion with academy award-nominated and highly regarded investigative journalist and film Director Kirby Dick.

Stick around for a strategy session and continued conversation starting at 4:45 p.m., where select individuals will have a deeper discussion with the director and others in the film and learn more about how best to affect change in the interest of public health.

Monday, Nov. 12

10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Advancing Health Equity and Social Justice: Voices from the Field

This session features the stories of community members and leaders on neighborhood and community-specific issues. It also explores the influence of culture, social discrimination, poverty, and other key determinants of health on people’s lives and work via a series of moving interviews and stories.

1-2:30 p.m. Facts Matter: Truth, Media and Public Health

During this session, you’ll hear from Alan Miller, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and founder of The News Literacy Project , Jennifer Kavanagh from RAND’s Truth Decay project, Tessa Jolls from the Center for Media Literacy, and Paul Sission from the San Diego Union Tribune. Our world is awash in a super-saturated, fast-moving vast array of information from endless amounts of faces and places. This session will boost your ability to determine what is real news, what is questionable and what needs to be deleted.

3-4:30 p.m. Community-Driven Solutions for Health Equity: A Conversation with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Community empowerment and action is key to advancing health equity. This session features films about three 2017 Culture of Health Prize winners, and showcases stories of commitment, resilience and teamwork across the following communities: Richmond, Virginia; Seneca Nations of Indians, New York; and San Pablo, California.

Tuesday, Nov. 13

10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Reel to Real, Public Health Strategies for Combating the Opioid Epidemic Collaborative Session

This discussion will examine how film can be used to break down barriers and change understanding about addiction and the opioid epidemic. Two FBI agents will discuss their film “Chasing the Dragon,” which has reached communities and Congress with the story of the opioid crisis and encouraged policy change.
