Description
In the second of a three-part webinar series designed to to increase the knowledge of public health professionals in addressing the opioid epidemic, presenters will describe the key steps in the recovery journey and the essential features of support by a peer who has taken similar steps. It will be based upon a first person account.
Over the past quarter century, we have learned that people who have substance use disorders may face a recovery journey that can last a lifetime. During this journey, the person in recovery needs strong social supports that include a peer, who also has undertaken the same journey (Birtel, Wood, & Kempa, 2017). Peer based recovery support is the "process of giving and receiving nonprofessional, nonclinical assistance to achieve long-term recovery from substance use disorders" (Bassuk, Hanson, Greene, Richard, & Laudet, 2016). Such support from a peer and the community can facilitate treatment and rehabilitation services.
Speakers:
Tom Coderre, Altarum Institute
Tom Hill, National Council on Behavioral Health
Learning Outcomes:
- Identify strategies necessary to apply the stages of recovery.
- Describe the steps of the peer support model.
- Discuss the relationship between recovery and treatment/rehabilitation.
