Dr. Monique J. Brown is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the Arnold School of Public Health (ASPH) at the University of South Carolina. She is also a Faculty Affiliate in the SmartState Center for Healthcare Quality, the Rural and Minority Health Research Center and the Office for the Study on Aging. She is also Deputy Director of the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Leadership, Education, and Advancement in Undergraduate Pathways (LEAP) Program. She completed a postdoctoral research fellowship and was a Research Assistant Professor in the College of Behavioral and Community Sciences at the University of South Florida (USF). She received her BS degree from Bates College, and her MPH from the Brown University School of Public Health. Before receiving her PhD in Epidemiology from the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine, she worked as a Data Analyst at the Boston Public Health Commission. She has also received training in Clinical and Translational Research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She is also President and Founder of Brown Research Consulting, Inc, which provides public health and research support to individuals and organizations.
Dr. Brown has served as a leader in several roles. Within APHA, she currently serves as a member of the Intersectional Council Steering Committee. She has served as Chair, Program Co-Chair, Governing Councilor, and Section Councilor for the HIV/AIDS Section, is a member of the Epidemiology Section and the South Carolina Public Health Association. Dr. Brown has served as a moderator of several conference sessions at APHA. Outside of APHA, she serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Gerontological Society of America (GSA). She also served as a Convener for the HIV and Aging Interest Group at GSA. She also serves on the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committees for ASPH and the Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER). She was also recently elected to serve on the Executive Committee for SER, and served on the HIV Advisory Council for Mayor Stephen Benjamin of Columbia from 2019-2021. Dr. Brown has also been asked to serve on several panels including career panels, research panels, and panels focused on DEI. She currently mentors several students, majority of whom identify as students from underrepresented backgrounds.
