Established in 2024, the APHA Executive Board Impact Award recognizes a living individual for their exceptionally commendable contributions to the advancement of the association’s mission in a way that is significantly impactful. The award is not presented annually. Meritorious candidates will be nominated by the executive director and confirmed by the APHA Executive Board.
Alfredo Morabia, MD, MPH, Editor-In-Chief, American Journal of Public Health (AJPH) received the 2024 APHA Executive Board Impact Award for instituting new ways to engage readers through his podcast, journal newsletter and student think tank. The journal has achieved new highs in readership, scientific impact and public awareness. He has pushed to ensure the journal is always a part of current discussions in public health, reducing publication times from over a year post-acceptance to three months on average, and within four weeks in some cases. This has enabled AJPH to rapidly cover emerging threats to public health, such as attacks on reproductive rights — and our successes, like thoughtful COVID-19 policies that saved lives. He hosts a State of the Public Health Union every year, broadcast through YouTube and other channels, and meets annually with leaders from government, academia and the publishing industry. Dr. Morabia has fully engaged the association in so many effective ways by providing a high-quality benefit to association members.
