Statement from APHA Executive Director George C. Benjamin, MD

“On behalf of the American Public Health Association, I applaud the incoming Biden/Harris administration for the outstanding team they have assembled to combat one of the greatest public health threats our country is facing today: climate change.

This diverse and experienced group of leaders offers a bold opportunity to prioritize this issue and to develop innovative solutions to address the climate crisis and the related concern of environmental racism that plagues communities in the United States and around the world.

We know confronting climate change is a monumental task that will require a cross-sectoral approach that at its foundation can create jobs, build resilient communities and make historic investments in environmental justice to advance public health and economic opportunity for all. We stand ready to work with the incoming administration to address these challenges and to strengthen the ability of our public health system to combat the health impacts we are seeing now and those we will face in the future.”
