Biography

Melissa Toledo-Ontiveros headshotMelissa Toledo-Ontiveros, MA, MCJ, MPA, a passionate and driven individual hailing from the beautiful state of New Mexico. She currently serves as a Project and Community Developer at Community Action Agency SNM, where she makes a positive impact on the lives of people in Southern New Mexico.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Melissa is deeply involved in public health initiatives and policies, dedicating her efforts to bettering the well-being of others at local, state, and federal levels. Her commitment to advancing race and gender equity, housing, mental health, and workforce development showcases her dedication to creating a fairer and more inclusive society.

Outside of work, Melissa embraces a life filled with adventure and cherished moments. She finds solace in the great outdoors, indulging in camping and fishing trips that connect her with nature's wonders. Additionally, she likes to travel and explore new places and cultures, all while cherishing valuable moments spent with her family and friends.

Candidate Statement

I am honored to be considered for the position of Executive Board member within the American Public Health Association. With a diverse and extensive background in public health, I have dedicated my career to fostering healthy communities and advocating for equity and resilience.

Professional Background:

As the former President of the New Mexico Public Health Association, I led our organization for four years, championing public health initiatives in NM.

My involvement with APHA has been a cornerstone of my professional development. I had the privilege of serving on the APHA Climate and Health Equity Board for four years and the Community for Social Responsibility (CSR) Board as liaison to the Council of Affiliates for three years. I have served as NMPHA’s ARGC for past three years. These experiences have equipped me with the knowledge and insight to contribute meaningfully to APHA's mission.

Vision and Mission:

As an Executive Board member, I will support APHA in accomplishing its mission of building public health capacity and promoting effective policy and practice.

1. Build Workforce Capacity and Effectiveness:

  • Advocate for continuous professional development.

2. Champion Public Health:

  • Raise public health awareness.
  • Advocate for policies that protect and promote public health.

3. Advance Equitable Public Health Practices and Outcomes:

  • Implement programs that address social determinants of health.

4. Improve Member Engagement and Satisfaction:

  • Enhance communication channels to ensure members feel heard and valued.

5. Execute Operational Excellence:

  • Promote transparency and accountability within APHA operations.
  • Strive for efficiency and effectiveness in organizational processes.

I am committed to the values and mission of APHA and believe together, we can achieve optimal and equitable health.
