The Health Informatics Information Technology (HIIT) Section of the American Public Health Association (APHA) enhances public health through the multidisciplinary expertise of its members. HIIT plays a vital role in the promotion, prevention, and treatment of a wide range of illnesses, injuries, and diseases worldwide. The HIIT Section combines the fields of public health informatics, computer science, and health information technology, and harnesses cutting-edge tools such as data analytics, big data, and advanced artificial intelligence (AI)—from generative to self-aware models—to enhance patient care and improve public health outcomes. These efforts extend beyond traditional clinical settings, driving continuous progress in public health. The HIIT Section collaborates with every APHA section, forum, caucus, affiliate, and student assembly to help achieve their respective goals. It enhances scientific programs and policy papers by incorporating advanced HIIT interventions, shaping the future of public health.
The HIIT Special Primary Interest Group was founded in 2007 and became an official section in 2009. Diane L. Adams, MD, MPH, DABCHS CHS-III, serves as the Founder and Chair-Emeritus, and Jayfus T. Doswell, PhD, is the Co-Founder. The HIIT Section is the official public health informatics and information technology component of APHA, playing a key role in advancing the association's 153-year legacy.
