Genomics is becoming increasingly relevant to public health. Developments in biomedical science and technology are shedding new light on how the environments in which people live, work, and play — whether physical, chemical, ancestral, psychological, or social — affect our genomes, the expression of genes, and ultimately our health both individually and collectively.
The Genomics Forum will engage the public health community to promote workforce competency in genomics. Our goals include improving understanding of the relevance and impact of genomics on public health. We will engage public health professionals, health care providers and other interest holders in projects and activities designed to increase awareness, knowledge and skills related to genetics and genomics, focusing on:
- The ethical, legal, and social issues surrounding genetics/ genomics/ epigenetics
- The relationship and relevance of genomics to public health, health care, and health disparities
- Professional and public education
- Other areas as identified by Forum members
