APHA Annual Meeting and Expo Monday General Session: “Policy-Mediated Violence: A Threat to Health”

Policy can make a big difference in either increasing or reducing violence. The Monday General Session, to be held 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Mountain Time on Oct. 26 during APHA’s virtual Annual Meeting, will explore the role of policy formation and implementation. Moderated by Angela Glover Blackwell, JD, founder of PolicyLink, a national research and action institute advancing economic and social equity, presenters will talk about how policy creation can mitigate violence. The scheduled presenters are:

  • David Williams, PhD, MPH, of the Harvard T.C. Chan School of Public Health, giving an overview of racism in America.
  • Mona Hanna-Attisha, MD, MPH, an associate professor of pediatrics and human development at the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University, discussing policy-mediated violence as a threat to health.
  • Anthony Iton, MD, JD, MPH, senior vice president for health communities at the California Endowment, discussing the importance of advocacy for policies to reduce violence.
