The Medical Care Section honors leaders in public health and medical care, presenting awards during the APHA Annual Meeting.


Avedis Donabedian Healthcare Quality Award

The Avedis Donabedian Healthcare Quality Award aims to revitalize and impart an appreciation of the work of 1999 APHA Sedgwick honoree Avedis Donabedian, MD, MPH, and to recognize outstanding contributions to quality assurance and improvement of health care.

Arthur J. Viseltear Prize

The Arthur J. Viseltear Prize is awarded to historians who have made important contributions to the study of the history of public health.

Medical Care Section Award

The Medical Care Section Award recognizes leadership, service and dedication to the Section. Most of the awardees were past Medical Care Section chairs at the time of the award. The award honors excellence in policy development and program planning as well as efforts to build the Section’s membership and student engagement opportunities.

Student Awards

The Medical Care Section has bestowed student awards for many years. Awards have honored outstanding student abstracts and presentations at the APHA Annual Meeting.

Barbara Starfield Medical Care Scholars

The purpose of this program is to offer leadership and professional development opportunities to outstanding students within the APHA Medical Care Section. The award covers one year of APHA membership, APHA Annual Meeting registration, and transportation to the meeting, at which the scholars help staff the booth and other events, as well as attend a Joint Policy hearing, a Governing Council meeting, Medical Care Section business meetings and sessions. All participants write a blog post, news article, or op-ed as part of the reporting requirement. Must be a full- or part-time graduate or undergraduate student at time of application (may graduate prior to Annual Meeting). Must be an APHA member to apply. If awarded and not already a member, must become a member of the Medical Care Section. Application deadlines are generally in the spring.

An Evening with…

At every APHA Annual Meeting, the Medical Care Section holds a special program titled “An Evening With…” It is a time to hear from a person or group responsible for significant contribution to public health. The evening is an opportunity for Medical Care Section and other APHA members to meet and talk with individuals and groups that shape public health issues.
