Statement from APHA Executive Director Georges C. Benjamin, MD

The American Public Health Association calls on Congress to take immediate action in the wake of today’s school shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia. We are horrified that one of our nation’s schools is again the site of a deadly mass shooting, taking the lives of two students, two teachers and injuring others. We send our condolences to the families of the four victims and our heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery to those currently hospitalized.

Once again, one of our nation’s schools has been turned from a place of learning, laughter and comfort for our country’s future leaders into a deadly chaotic nightmare. And it isn’t just happening at schools, these tragic events are a nationwide problem. Today’s shooting marks the nation’s 10th mass shooting recorded already this month.

We call on Congress to end the senseless blockade and to immediately consider and pass a comprehensive and sound public health approach to address this epidemic of gun violence. This includes expanding funding for public health research to improve our understanding of the science behind the problem and to accurately quantify and describe the root causes of gun violence. At the same time, we know enough to act right now using evidenced based solutions that save lives. Congress should immediately take up legislation to close all remaining loopholes and require universal background checks for all firearm purchases in the U.S., prohibit the sale of certain assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines and pass legislation that allows the removal of firearms from those deemed potentially harmful to themselves or others through the issuance of extreme risk protection orders.

Until we act as a nation, we will continue to experience these tragedies, and we know our words and condolences are not enough to end the senseless suffering of the victims and their families, friends and communities.
