It is with great sadness that APHA acknowledges the death of Adewale Troutman, MD, MA, MPH, CPH. Dr. Troutman was a public health luminary who led APHA as our President in 2013. His career focused on addressing health disparities and achieving health equity. His work on the social determinants of health helped transform the modern public health landscape across the United States. As the health officer in Louisville, KY, Dr. Troutman opened and led the development of a first of its kind, center for health equity at a local health department level and helped ignite a national conversation about the impact of inequality on health as a star in the nationally televised PBS/California NewsReel series, “Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?”

Dr. Troutman was a giant presence in the field of public health and in life. His contributions will continue and he will be missed by everyone in the public health family. APHA sends it condolences to his wife, his children and grandchildren and all those lucky enough to have had the privilege of knowing him.

“Dr. Troutman was a leader for justice and health, public health practitioner, educator and mentor” said Georges C. Benjamin, MD, APHA executive director. “I have lost a close friend, APHA a great leader and the public a true champion for health. We will miss him, but his influence on our lives was profound and everlasting.”

A statement from Dr. Troutman's family provides more information on his life and career.
