APHA appalled by House passage of American Health Care Act

Date: May 04 2017

Statement by Georges C. Benjamin, MD, Executive Director, APHA

May 4, 2017 -- "Today, cynical members of the House of Representatives voted against the will of the majority of the people to destroy the health and well-being of millions of Americans. It is a sad day for America.

"This bill as passed will get us less coverage, higher costs and poorer health. It is a patchwork of bad ideas based on uninformed ideology disguised as policy.

"If this were a serious attempt at solving our nation’s health challenges, congressional leaders would have at the very least consulted experts and waited for independent analysis from the Congressional Budget Office to learn the bill’s true cost and impact. They did not.

"The American Public Health Association will hold representatives accountable for this appalling vote.

"We urge the Senate to not be as reckless, short-sighted and heartless. American lives are at stake."

APHA outlined its strong opposition to the American Health Care Act in a letter sent today to all members of the House of Representatives.
