Guidelines for querying APHA Press

The mission of APHA Press is to provide public health practitioners, scholars, early career professionals and students with accessible and affordable resources while supporting the its parent organization, APHA. We welcome book ideas from authors endeavoring to write meaningful and influential books related to these five strategic pillars: 1) Communicable Diseases, 2) Chronic Conditions, 3) Food, Water, Environment, 4) Determinants of Health: Social, Behavioral, and Economic and 5) Policy, Advocacy, and Communications.

Although the Press is focused on books that can be categorized under one or more of these five pillars, we also welcome ideas outside of these pillars. If, as a potential author, you are interested in learning whether your book idea is of interest to APHA Press, please email a short description of the book (~500–1000 words) to APHA Press and you’ll receive a response within a few days. This description should include a few paragraphs about the book, list the lead editors/authors and their current titles and affiliations, explain why you believe this book will be an important addition to the public health literature and describe the target market and the intended audience for the book.

Once received, the inquiry will be reviewed by APHA Press to determine if this idea is a suitable fit within our strategic publishing plan and worth developing into a proposal. APHA Press may have questions or recommendations that will help guide potential authors to develop a successful proposal. Thus, we suggest waiting until you receive an answer from APHA Press prior to developing your book proposal. If APHA Press is interested in your book idea, the acquisitions editor will provide you with further guidelines.
