Statement from APHA Executive Director Georges C. Benjamin, MD

“As we continue addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and the critical health challenges of our nation, I heartily welcome the confirmation of Xavier Becerra as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

APHA enthusiastically supported Becerra’s nomination to lead this vital agency, standing with his numerous accomplishments as attorney general of California and as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for more than two decades. Throughout his time as a dedicated public servant, he has been a champion in defending the Affordable Care Act while also pushing aggressive solutions to climate change and crises related to environmental justice.

I have no doubt that Becerra will apply the same leadership to his new role, promising hope for a better era of public health as we approach the later stages of this health crisis and the new demands they bring. In the meantime, we look forward to working with this historically diverse administration, as well as Congress, to accomplish our vision of creating the healthiest nation in one generation.”
