Advancing Environmental Justice through Technical Assistance Mini-Grants Program

Hui o Ho‘ohonua (HOH808) is a non-profit created by community members of the Ewa moku (district or land division), which includes Pu’uloa (Pearl Harbor). Their mission is to end the perpetuation of historical trauma to Ewa’s land, water and people through reciprocal learning, working side by side with the Ewa community, and serving its kupuna (elders) and current residents.

Lideres Campesinas is a statewide network based in Oxnard, California whose mission is to strengthen the leadership of farmworker women and girls so that together, they become the bridge that reaches the social, economic and political changes that ensure their human rights. The mission of Healthy Homes Coalition is to prioritize children’s health and well-being by eliminating harmful housing conditions, beginning in Grand Rapids’ hardest hit neighborhoods. They achieve this mission through direct services, community organizing, and continuous collaboration.

Strategic Communications with Resonance Communications Hub (2022)

Resonance, a progressive communications hub with expertise in social justice and equity, hosted a workshop and provided technical assistance for the NEHPC EJTA environmental justice organization grantees. To further the reach of this work, they developed this strategic communications guide that offers best practices and sample communications that can be used by any organization working towards social justice.

The Advancing Environmental Justice through Technical Assistance session at the APHA 2022 Annual Meeting and Expo discussed how the EJTA program supports environmental justice organizations in building capacity to advance environmental justice and the grantees’ experience.

Program grantees, including the Healthy Homes Coalition of West Michigan (Executive Director Jameela Maun pictured on the left) and Organización de Lideres Campesinas en California, shared their environmental justice work, activities and experiences under the grant program, and further opportunities in their field of work. A technical assistance provider to the grantees shared their insights as an expert in environmental health and discussed the importance of technical assistance in advancing environmental justice work.
