Give Back

Each year, APHA's Annual Meeting and Expo is hosted in a different U.S. city and selects a local organization to donate to leading up to the meeting. The APHA 2021 host city charity is the Metro Denver Homeless Initiative, or MDHI, a regional system that coordinates services and housing for people experiencing homelessness.

APHA partnered with MDHI in 2016 and chose to partner with them again in 2021 to address the issue of homelessness in Denver and share APHA’s strong commitment to ending and preventing homelessness nationwide. We ask that all attendees join us in the effort to make an impact in Denver and encourage the following donation increments: $25, $50, $75, $100 or choose your own. Monetary donations go directly to coordinating Denver's regional response to homelessness by focusing on housing as the solution to homelessness.

Metro Denver Continuum of Care
MDHI is the Metro Denver Continuum of Care, which is a regional system that coordinates services and housing for people experiencing homelessness. This work includes street outreach, emergency shelter, transitional housing, rapid rehousing, prevention and diversion, and permanent supportive housing. MDHI works closely with each county in our continuum (Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, and Jefferson), building a homeless crisis response system aimed at getting people stably housed as quickly as possible. That's the core of what we believe - housing is the solution to homelessness.

MDHI's History
MDHI was formed in 1994 to coordinate service and housing assistance available from organizations throughout the metro area. MDHI brought together 70 organizations, including homeless service and housing providers, local and state governmental agencies, foundations, mental health centers, neighborhood groups, and people with lived experience of homelessness to develop a Continuum of Care, or CoC. With support from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and other public and private sources, MDHI has since become a regional leadership body coordinating resources and services, identifying needs, and disseminating evidence-based practices to end homelessness.

Governance Structure
MDHI coordinates and supports the Metro Denver CoC, a multi-agency collaboration focused on ending homelessness in the seven-county Denver metropolitan area. The CoC brings together public and private organizations to provide an array of homelessness prevention services, housing placement assistance, transitional housing, and permanent supportive housing for persons who are experiencing homelessness or at risk.
