APHA cheers Supreme Court’s decision to keep health coverage affordable in every state
Statement from Georges C. Benjamin, MD, executive director of APHA
Washington, D.C., June 25, 2015 — “The American Public Health Association applauds the Supreme Court’s decision today in King v. Burwell, which supports more than 6 million Americans keeping health insurance. We are pleased the court understood the legislative history and intent of this law and ruled in favor of the administration. This ruling ensures that health insurance tax credits will remain available in all states and more importantly that health insurance will remain affordable for those people who receive it through the exchanges.
“Today, more than 6 million Americans can breathe a sigh of relief. That’s how many people gained coverage through the federal government’s health insurance exchange and relied on tax credits to afford it. The ACA’s Health Insurance Marketplace made this possible, bringing unprecedented opportunities for Americans to access health services necessary to prevent sickness, live longer and healthier, and do so at better prices than before.
“We know that when people can’t afford health insurance, they don’t get health care — and get sicker as a result. As demonstrated in APHA’s King v. Burwell fact sheet and friend of the court brief, the Supreme Court eliminated the threat of 9,800 preventable deaths per year by keeping health insurance affordable. Just as importantly, many of the 34 states that use the federal exchange — and face a disproportionate burden of chronic disease, cancer deaths, infant mortality and health inequity — can keep their residents healthier.
“APHA and the public health community rejoice in today’s decision, and look forward to working with the administration and Congress to realize the ACA’s full potential.”
