Transgender and gender non-conforming individuals encounter numerous social and institutional challenges that significantly affect their physical and mental wellbeing. Several studies have indicated a higher mental health burden among transgender adults than cisgender adults. A recent study in the May issue of the American Journal of Public Health reports a stark increase in mental health issues among transgender adults from 2014 to 2021.

The American Journal of Public Health (AJPH), in partnership with the University of California, Los Angeles Fielding School of Public Health, have created this special issue dedicated to delivering insights that challenge traditional approaches to mental health while focusing on the pressing mental health crises exacerbated by recent events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, international wars and societal disparities. "The Social Context of Mental Health, Bereavement and Grief: A Call for Public Mental Health" sheds light on the critical intersection of mental health and societal well-being.

The American Journal of Public Health (AJPH) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have created this special issue dedicated to tackling the urgent matter of mental health among healthcare workers. Health Worker Mental Health: From the Current Crisis to a Sustainable Future delves into the challenges confronting health workers and examines critical research findings that aim to cultivate tangible solutions.

A series of editorials and papers exploring community-engaged research during the COVID-19 pandemic covers how to create effective community needs assessments and surveys to inform local COVID-19 mitigation strategies, how to develop and test locally and culturally relevant community engagement approaches, achieve sustained uptake of proven interventions and examine strategies for building and sustaining community trust.
